History
Deriving its name from the Sinhala name Ran-gala, meaning gold ‘Ran’ and stone ‘Gala’, Tangalle is distinct in culture and history. Myth has it that the name came in to being because a man of pious belief had sat on rock and taken his meal, and such rock had turned in to gold.
Highlighting its strategic importance, the three European colonial powers utilised Tangalle as an important base for trade. Today however its economic objectives are focused primarily on its port. Preserving one of the largest bays in the country, Tangalle is one of the largest contributors to the domestic fisheries industry.
Over the past two decades it has been growing a reputation for being one of the foremost holiday destinations in the country. Many globe trotters who prefer to relax on the golden sands of the beach for days on end, prefer to vacation in Tangalle.

Mulkirigala Raja Maha Vihara
An ancient temple, the Mulkirigala Raja Maha Vihara was constructed by King Saddhatissa during the Anuradhapura era. A significant feature of the temple is that it is built on a rock over 600 meters above sea level. Encompassing several shrines, the rock is a delight for the culture thirsty trekker.
Hummanaya
Considered to be the second largest blowhole in the world, Hummanaya is one of the primary attractions for the international loafer. Its name originating because of the ‘hoo’ sound it makes when it spurts up water.
Dutch Architecture
For the curious wanderer, there are a few edifices that display remnants of the Dutch presence in the region. The Dutch Fort, and court house is primary example here. However, today the Dutch Fort functions as a prison.
Wevurukannala Viharaya
Displaying the largest seated Lord Buddha statue, Wevurukannala Vihara is an intriguing site for travellers. Found in Dickwella, the compound also maintains a large 8 story building that showcases a vivid collection of paintings and murals.
Turtle Sanctuary
Operated by non-profit organisation and the locals, the Turtle Sanctuary is found in the adjacent region of Rekawa. Home to a selected number of species including Green Turtles, Loggerhead Turtles, Hawksbill turtles, the sanctuary is a delight for any animal lover.
